First Robotic Proximal Redo Ureteroureterostomy Successfully Performed at The View Hospital

Advances in robotic surgery continue to expand the possibilities of complex urological reconstruction. This was demonstrated at The View Hospital through the successful performance of the first robotic-assisted proximal redo ureteroureterostomy, performed by Dr. Ihab Abutabanjeh, in a patient with a challenging surgical history.

The patient, a young male, initially presented with a recurrent proximal ureteral stricture following laser ureterolithotripsy. A previous attempt at laparoscopic ureteroureterostomy was unsuccessful, resulting in persistent ureteral obstruction and progressive deterioration of renal function on the affected side.

At the time of consultation with Dr. Ihab Abutabanjeh, detailed imaging and functional assessments confirmed significant compromise of the ipsilateral kidney due to ongoing proximal ureteral obstruction. Given the complexity of the case, the failure of prior surgical intervention, and the high location of the stricture, a decision was made to proceed with a robotic-assisted proximal redo ureteroureterostomy, offering enhanced visualization, precision, and control.

The procedure was completed successfully within approximately 70 minutes. Intraoperatively, major challenges included dense periureteral fibrosis resulting from the previous surgery and the proximal location of the stricture, both of which required meticulous dissection and precise ureteral anastomosis. Robotic magnification and articulated instrumentation enabled accurate tissue handling and reconstruction despite these technical difficulties.

The patient’s postoperative recovery was uneventful, and he was discharged in stable condition 36 hours after surgery. A follow-up diuretic renogram performed two months later demonstrated unobstructed urinary drainage with preservation of renal function, confirming an excellent functional outcome.

This case highlights the role of robotic-assisted surgery in managing complex and previously failed ureteral reconstructions and reflects The View Hospital’s commitment to advanced surgical care delivered by specialized expertise.
